The Struggles of a Teenager-Drugs and Alcohol
There is an immense pressure on teens to use drugs and alcohol. Teens not only use drugs and alcohol because they are pressured into it, but they can also use it as their way of self-medicating because of feelings of depression.
They may also think that THEY won’t be one of “those people” who get addicted. They may also think they just want to do it for fun, or to relax, or to help them stay awake and study for a test. These things are what teens say to themselves and to each other.
How do I prevent my child from using drugs and/or alcohol?
Make sure that you are being honest with your kids about drugs and alcohol. Make sure they understand the consequences (immediate and prolonged) that go along with using them.
Also, some temperaments have weakness that make them more susceptible to addiction. Knowing your child’s temperament and their strengths and weakness can help aid in the prevention of drugs and alcohol use.
If your child struggles with depression, anxiety, or stress it is important that they are taught healthy coping skills. Then they will not turn to drugs and alcohol as their relief as easily. That may mean that they need professional help to deal with the issues they are having.
What should I do if my child is using drugs and/or alcohol?
First thing you need to do is get them professional help.
Also if your child is using drugs or alcohol they may not be getting drugs from someone on a street corner or alcohol from another kid at school. They may be getting it from your medicine or liquor cabinet. It is important that you are aware of the prescriptions and alcohol you have in your home and lock them up or get them out of your home.
