The Struggles of a Teenager- Bullying and Cyber Bullying
New technology had opened the door for us in many positive ways. It has also opened the door for people to invade us personally in our homes and in our children’s rooms. Cyber bullying has become a major issue with teens today. It makes it easier to bully and easier to get away with bullying; this can easily be done anonymously.
Whether it be cyber bullying or bullying, it causes tremendous harm and stress in a child’s life. It can lead to depression, self harm, feelings of worthlessness, thoughts of suicide, and it some cases, suicide.
What do I do if my child is bullied?
The worst thing you could do is think that it will pass or they will figure it out themselves. You might be thinking that when you were that age you were bullied and you figured it out. It “toughened you up”. Depending on your child’s temperament that mentality could really hurt them. Your child is NOT you. No one, regardless of temperament, should EVER be bullied. You are their protector, and their safe place to fall. They need you on their team.
What do I do if my child is bullying?
If your child is bullying others the worst thing you could do is make excuses for them. You may think that its just harmless teasing but they are doing it at another persons expense. It is not “normal” for someone to bully. There is always an underlining problem. Ususally it has to do with their self- esteem. It gives them a false sense of power; which for a short time, makes them feel better. They are also hurting and struggling and need help and guidance. This is not a reason to excuse their behavior, this is a reason why they are demonstrating this behavior. They may need professional help to sort through their problems and build their self-esteem.
