Is There Such Thing As A “Family Curse”?
All of our families going back generations have things they carry with them generation to generation. For some families that may be something physical like having red hair, blue eyes, or darker skin. Obviously these are not things that are considered to be a “curse”. These are physical traits that are passed down through each generation.
You may wonder if there is such a thing as a “family curse”, and if there is, how to fix yours.
Is there such thing as a “family curse”?
In Exodus 20:5 it says:
“You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affections with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations.”
Then bible is talking about a generational curse. It is not simply saying God will punish you because of what your great-grandparents did it means you will be effected by what they did.
For example:
If your father was an alcoholic and you lived with him in that unstable environment; you are most likely to also follow in the same sins your father did.
How do I break the bonds of the past and ensure healing for my family?
That answer is quite simple. It is repentance. Jesus died on the cross to save ALL sins. He will take that burden not only for you but for your family and the generations to come after you.
Continuing on to Exodus 20:6 he promises:
“But I lavish my love on those who love me and obey my commands, even for a thousand generations.”
He will bless the generations after you. Part of breaking the bonds of the past may mean, for your family, to defeat the power of alcoholism, drugs, addiction to pornography, or any other thing coming before God.
