TVHP: Have I Held On Too Tight?
Sometimes I wonder if some of my fears, as a parent, have stunted my son in some ways.
As parents, we are always on guard when it comes to our children.
We want to make sure that they are always safe. Because of this, I have become aware that in some areas I have held on too tight.
How have I held on too tight?
Some of you out there may know exactly what I mean. And others not so much; so I will explain…
When my son was young we were at the park playing on the playground equipment. He was still pretty small so when he wanted to go down the slide I made sure to walk up the stairs to the slide with him. I would have him wait to go down until I was able to get to the bottom to catch him. On this particular day, he stood up at the top of the slide, before I was at the bottom, and fell off from the top.
Seeing him fall was one of the scariest experiences I have had with him. He fell on his face and stomach. I could not get to him quick enough. The Lord had his arms around him and there was not a single scratch on him.
From that day on I have noticed that I am so worried about that happening again that I have stunted his confidence on the playground. He is very cautious on stairs, climbing walls, and ladders. I have had to take a step back and give the reigns to the Lord.
Because I am able to finally do that(just recently), I have seen his confidence in himself grown. Which is exactly what I want for him. I have realized I let fear take over to the point that I was also causing him fear. But when I am able to give it to the Lord, he never fails.
