Just Be Happy…
Just be happy. For someone plagued with depression, the statement, “just be happy” simply doesn’t help.
Depression goes much deeper than simply choosing to be or not to be happy.
If it were as simple as those three words, many people would not struggle with feeling depressed.
Someone in my family is dealing with depression.
When you have never dealt with depression, understanding it can be very difficult. You may be trying to help by being encouraging or giving advice.
Telling someone who is depressed to “choose to be happy” or “look at everything good in your life” can feel very insensitive to the person struggling. And can also make them feel even more alone.
The truth is that most of the time, people struggling with depression do not tell others for fear of being judged or not understood. A lot of the time they don’t even understand why they feel the way they do and want to feel better.
