Forgiveness…And How It Frees You
Last week we talked about anger and what it can do to you if you allow it to take hold of you.
The only way to break free from the control anger has on you is to forgive. In Ephesians 4:31-32 it says:
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Getting rid of the anger and bitterness you carry will help you open your heart to forgiveness.
Sometimes, the things others have done to you, can seem like too much to handle.
I don’t think I can forgive what they did.
Forgiveness is not easy. The more you feel that someone has wronged or hurt you the harder it is to forgive them.
The decision to not forgive causes YOU more hardship, pain, anger, and bitterness than the person who has wronged you.
How does forgiveness free me?
Holding a grudge is like an anchor that will only continue to pull you down and keep you down.
You have probably heard the phrase, “Forgiveness is for you, not them” many times throughout your life. When you have forgiven someone and let that anger go, there is a feeling of relief and freedom that goes along with that forgiveness.
Also, giving your pain and anger to the Holy Spirit can free you of the control anger has on you. He will help you to forgive even when you do not think you can.
Forgiveness is a choice, although it may not always feel that way. Next time you find it difficult to forgive try praying,
” Holy Spirit I choose to forgive _______. I ask that you help me to forgive them in the same way you have forgiven me. Teach me how to truly forgive and let go.”
